RIG Rwanda through its subsidiary Rwanda Energy Company provides reliable supply of quality peat for energy generation and industrial applications across Rwanda and the region.
Peat Supply Operations
Rwanda Energy Company (REC), a wholly-owned subsidiary of RIG, operates a comprehensive peat supply chain that serves industries and energy producers throughout Rwanda and the broader East African region. As the country's leading supplier of bio-peat, REC extracts, processes, and delivers high-quality peat briquettes that serve as an alternative energy fuel for industrial use, reducing reliance on imported fossil fuels and contributing to Rwanda's energy independence.
Peat is a naturally abundant resource in Rwanda, and its use as an energy source represents a sustainable and cost-effective solution for industries seeking reliable fuel supplies. REC's peat supply operations ensure consistent quality and availability, enabling factories, cement plants, and other industrial facilities to maintain uninterrupted production cycles with a dependable domestic fuel source.
Production Sites
REC operates three strategically located production sites across Rwanda -- Gishoma, Mashya, and Rwabusoro -- each selected for its proximity to rich peat deposits and accessibility for distribution logistics. These sites are equipped with modern extraction and processing equipment to ensure efficient, large-scale production while adhering to responsible environmental management practices.
- Gishoma: Located in the Western Province, the Gishoma site is one of REC's primary production hubs, benefiting from extensive peat bog reserves and established infrastructure for processing and transport.
- Mashya: Situated in the Southern Province, the Mashya facility contributes significantly to overall production volumes and serves clients in the central and southern regions of Rwanda.
- Rwabusoro: The Rwabusoro site complements the other facilities, expanding REC's geographic coverage and ensuring timely delivery to clients across the eastern corridor.
Production Capacity
With a combined production capacity of 38,000 to 50,000 tons of peat per annum across its three sites, REC is well-positioned to meet the growing demand for peat as an industrial energy source. This capacity allows the company to supply both large-scale industrial clients and smaller enterprises, providing flexible delivery schedules and customized supply agreements tailored to each client's energy requirements.
The company continuously invests in upgrading its extraction and processing capabilities to increase output, improve peat quality, and reduce production costs. By leveraging modern drying techniques and quality control measures, REC ensures that every shipment meets the stringent standards required for efficient combustion and energy generation.
