Rwanda has estimated national reserves of approximately 2.6 billion tons of wet peat, which if fully exploited can provide sufficient energy for the country's needs for several years.
Rwanda Energy Company Ltd (REC)
Rwanda Energy Company Ltd (REC), a wholly-owned subsidiary of RIG, started peat mining in 2009 as the only company in Rwanda engaged in large scale production of bio-peat as an alternative energy fuel. REC has since grown to become a key player in the country's energy sector, contributing to Rwanda's goal of diversifying its energy sources and reducing dependence on imported fuels.
The company's operations focus on extracting, processing, and supplying high-quality peat briquettes for use in industrial and domestic energy applications. Through continuous investment in modern equipment and sustainable extraction practices, REC ensures that peat resources are utilized responsibly while meeting the growing demand for affordable energy solutions.
Production Capacity
Current production capacity ranges between 38,000-50,000 tons of peat per annum at three production sites: Gishoma, Mashya, and Rwabusoro. These strategically located sites enable efficient production and distribution across Rwanda, serving both industrial clients and the broader energy market.
